The department is known for maintaining quality teaching and a cutting-edge research aptitude in the University and has a number of good profile faculty members. The key research areas include perovskite based photovoltaic materials, advanced composite materials, multiferroic materials, composites of conducting polymers, radiation detection and plasma. The department is progressing toward excellence in research, under the able leadership of Prof. Sonia Bansal, who is a dynamic teacher and a researcher. Her guidance, cooperation and support are raising the department to new heights.

The department offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The undergraduate program of the department is Bachelor’s degree of Honours in Physics (B.Sc. (H) Physics) with an intake of 60 students inaccordance with NEP. The postgraduate program is Master’s degree in Physics (M.Sc. Physics) with an intake of 60 students. Both the programs have renowned names in the region and state. The department also offers doctoral degree program (Ph.D.) to the eligible candidates in accordance with the UGC 2009 regulation. The enrolment in the program is based on the rules framed by UGC and the additions made by the University.
